Devoting too much time to one single task limits our ability for learning and information retention. While working on our computers, it is easy to feel disconnected from the outside world, the people around us, and even our own bodies. The Distractor is a computer-based application. It disrupts our focus through short distractions. This video show the:

1) The Link distractor recognizes content from the websites you are viewing and builds a list of click-able links for further contextual, but divergent searching

2) The distractor, Blink, interrupts your screen with quick, computer blinks which your eyes automatically mimic.

3) Outside In offers a subtle reminder of the outside world you are missing while hooked to your computer. It introduces real-time images and sounds from your local weather on to your screen.

What does pause mean and how is it attained? What types of conditions need to be present for creativity to take hold? What type of coping methods have individuals developed to help them move through a relatively distracting world? Best Practices started with the desire to know how other risd students cope with distraction and how they promote creativity within their working methods and lives. This question eventually broadened to encompass both risd students as well as working professionals. All of the people that were interviewed were asked the same set of nine questions, and were allowed to interpret the questions as they saw fit.

This book is an honest representation of all twenty-nine of their voices. Best Practices gathers the responses, and sorts them by question. The organizational method of the book allows the reader to gain an appreciation for the subjects’ varied approaches and responses. It allows for clear comparison of different people all answering the same question.

In the margin of the book, next to people’s responses, there is a running lists of the key words the interviewees use in their answers. At the end of the book there is a non-traditional index, (organized alphabetically), that visualizes the frequency of these key words in a format similar to a bar graph. This index visualizes the most widely referenced behaviors, needs, or coping methods.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25050/1251204/best practices5_860.jpg" width="860" height="522" width_o="860" height_o="522" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25050/1251204/best practices5_o.jpg" data-mid="7139669" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25050/1251204/best practices6_860.jpg" width="860" height="291" width_o="860" height_o="291" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25050/1251204/best practices6_o.jpg" data-mid="7139674" border="0" align="left"/>

The !Alert Trail places you in a physical and experiential space of a specific Providence crime. !Alert Trail, a collaborative project with Lynn Kiang, forces the pedestrians of Providence to confront the uncomfortable, to see under the surface, and to remember what they rather forget. !Alert Trail helps preserve providence’s lost memories and deliberately exposes you to the reality of crime through an intimate memorial of sound and visual artifact.

Each stop on the tour is inscribed typographically with a physical placard in the ground. The !Alert Trail is a self-guided, multi-channel tour, which is guided by a smart phone application. While on the tour, you are brought to over 20 specific points throughout Downtown and College Hill where a crime had taken place in the past year.

Content for the tour includes video reenactments, interviews, statistics and crime descriptions of the incident provided by the authorities. The !Alert Trail asks you to encounter discomfort head-on. It forces you to linger with content that is often passed over and ignored. By foregrounding the periphery, the Alert Trail uncovers meaning.

By enlarging and extruding words set in Pandora, formal distraction unfolds through an abstraction of shape and form. Pandora all but eliminates the blank, white space between letters and words. It purposefully frustrates the speed of decoding, and demands large amounts of time and patience to be read. It forces its readers to slow down, and invest in what they are reading.
